Gen Z Students Prefer Technology Industry: Report

The technology industry in India is attracting the attention of Gen Z students, who constitute the future workforce of the country. According to a report by Nasscom-Indeed, 77% of Gen Z students have shown interest in joining the tech sector, which offers them learning and growth opportunities, as well as culture and ethics.

Millennials and Gen Zs make up 90% of the tech workforce in India, creating a diverse and dynamic environment that shapes their preferences and expectations. The report, titled Future of Work 2024, examines the trends and transformations across three pillars: the future of jobs, workforce dynamics, and the evolving workspace.

Learning and Growth Gen Zs

One of the main criteria for both Millennials and Gen Zs when choosing an organisation is learning and growth, the report said. This reflects the employers’ focus on skilling and upskilling their employees to navigate the current work environment and develop their desired career paths.

The report also said that 84% of organisations are exploring or are open to gig models, with startups and the Business Process Management (BPM) sector leading in hiring in this segment. Gig workers offer on-demand talent and specialised expertise, while also enjoying flexible job locations and schedules.

Culture and Ethics of Gen Zs

Another important factor for both Millennials and Gen Zs is culture and ethics, the report said. This includes aspects such as diversity and inclusion, social responsibility, and employee well-being. The report said that organisations are adopting various initiatives to foster a positive and supportive culture, such as mentoring programs, employee resource groups, wellness programs, and social impact projects.

The report also said that for the future workforce, criteria for selecting an organisation remains similar, whereas career progression, compensation, benefits, and learning opportunities are the primary factors that drive them to continue with an organisation.

The report is based on a survey of 185 employers and over 2,500 individuals from current and future workforces. It aims to provide insights and recommendations for organisations to prepare for the future of work in the tech sector in India.
