The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has announced that all entities engaged in Machine-to-Machine (M2M) service provisioning and Wireless Personal Area Network as also Wireless Local Area Network (WPAN/WLAN) connectivity provisioning are required to register with DoT through a simple and transparent online process via SaralSanchar portal.
What is M2M and WPAN/WLAN?
M2M is a technology that enables devices to communicate with each other without human intervention, using wired or wireless networks. M2M applications include smart meters, vehicle tracking, remote monitoring, e-health, smart cities, etc.
WPAN and WLAN are wireless technologies that enable devices to connect with each other within a short range or a local area, respectively. WPAN and WLAN applications include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Zigbee, etc.
Why is registration required?
According to DoT, registration is required to address concerns like connectivity with telecom service providers (TSPs), know your customer (KYC), traceability and encryption for the M2M service providers and WPAN/WLAN connectivity providers. Registration would also help in facilitating wider proliferation and innovation in the M2M/IoT sector.
How to register?
The registration process is simple and transparent. Entities can register themselves through DoT’s SaralSanchar portal https://www.saralsanchar.gov.in by paying an application processing fee of Rs. 5000/- only. The portal provides guidelines for registration process of M2M service providers and WPAN/WLAN connectivity providers. The portal also provides a list of registered entities.
What are the consequences of non-compliance?
DoT has advised all entities engaged in M2M service provisioning and WPAN/WLAN connectivity provisioning to register with DoT as soon as possible. Non-compliance may lead to the withdrawal or disconnection of telecom resources obtained from authorised licensees.
