Denmark has launched a new initiative to boost its collaboration with India in the sustainable energy solutions sector, especially in the field of green fuels such as hydrogen and its derivatives. The initiative, called Green Fuels Alliance India (GFAI), was announced at the Global Investors Meet (GIM) 2024 in Chennai, where Denmark was the partner country.
What is GFAI?
GFAI is a strategic alliance led by the Danish Embassy and the Consulate General of Denmark in India, with the participation of nine leading Danish organisations from the green fuels sector. The alliance aims to foster innovation, partnerships, and knowledge exchange between Danish and Indian stakeholders, including businesses, government entities, research institutions, and financial institutions. The primary objective of GFAI is to promote sustainable energy growth in India by establishing an ecosystem that encourages the development and deployment of green fuels, such as green hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol.
Why is it important?
Green fuels are considered to be key enablers of the global energy transition and decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors, such as transportation, steel, and fertilizer production. However, green fuels face challenges such as high costs, low availability, and lack of infrastructure. By leveraging Denmark’s expertise and experience in renewable energy and green fuel technologies, GFAI aims to address these challenges and accelerate the adoption of green fuels in India. This will also help both countries achieve their ambitious climate targets: India has pledged to reach net-zero emissions by 2070, while Denmark aims to become carbon neutral by 2050.
How does it align with the bilateral partnership?
GFAI is a demonstration of the activities under the Green Strategic Partnership (GSP) signed between India and Denmark in 2020. The GSP is a comprehensive framework for cooperation on various aspects of green transition, such as renewable energy, water management, circular economy, urban development, and climate change. GFAI is also aligned with the India-Denmark Energy Partnership (INDEP), which focuses on capacity building and technology transfer in the areas of offshore wind, energy modelling, and integration of renewable energy. Through GFAI, Denmark and India hope to inspire other countries to join their efforts in advancing the green fuels sector and contributing to global climate action.
