Global Bio-India 2023: Showcasing India’s Biotech Aspirations

Global Bio-India 2023, set to take place from 4-6 December 2023 at Bharat Manadapam, Pragati Maidan in New Delhi, is being hailed as the largest congregation of biotech startups. Organized by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India, and its Public Sector Undertaking, Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), this event aims to showcase India’s biotech growth and opportunities to the world, contributing to India’s USD 5 trillion economy target. The central theme for this year’s event is ‘Biotech Innovation and Bio-manufacturing’​​​​.

The event will feature more than 30 participating countries, over 500 exhibitors, and more than 3000 delegates. A highlight of the event will be the participation of over 1000 startups, making it a significant platform for these emerging businesses​​. The focus of Global Bio-India 2023 will extend to various areas such as bio-manufacturing, capacity-building, clinical trials, drug discovery, and regulation & policies to create global supply chains for a growth-oriented roadmap in the biotechnology sector. The event will include technical sessions, policy dialogues, startup pavilions, B2B meetings, and a mega biotech exhibition by startups, SMEs, large companies, bioincubators, and bio-services​​.

Biomanufacturing is identified as a priority area, encompassing sectors such as 2G ethanol, bio-gas, enzymes, smart proteins, cell and gene therapy, vaccines, diagnostics, and other biologics for human, plant, and veterinary applications. The biotech product manufacturing sector requires high-end infrastructure, running costs, and skilled human resources. The event will also facilitate the promotion of greenfield and brownfield projects by states with established biotech policies​​​​.

India’s BioEconomy has seen substantial growth, rising from $44.7 billion in 2017 to $88.1 billion in 2021, with expectations that it has crossed the $100 billion milestone. The BioEconomy report for the calendar year 2022 will be released during Global Bio-India 2023, emphasizing the impact of biotech products and technologies. The projected target for India’s BioEconomy by 2030 is $300 billion, with states like Karnataka setting up a $50 billion Bioeconomy target for the same year​​.

The 2023 event promises to be larger than the previous year’s Biotech Startup Expo, with over 300 exhibits by successful biotech startups and SMEs, more than 100 biotech incubation centers, and representation from over 30 large industries, services, and CROs. There will be participation from 10 states promoting their biotech policies, 25 universities and research institutions, and over 30 countries. The event will feature more than 40 startup pitches to investors, sessions on science connect with society, and round table discussions with CEOs representing various sectors of the biotech industry​​.
