North India’s first government homoeopathic college, centrally funded at a cost of Rs 80 crore, will be established in Jasrota area of Kathua district in Jammu and Kashmir, Union Minister of State Dr Jitendra Singh said on Sunday. The institution will provide cost-effective and integrated healthcare to the people of the region and will also offer homoeopathy degree courses to the aspirants. The college will have a hospital complex, an administrative block and separate hostels for male and female students. The project is in line with the Modi government’s vision of promoting Ayush streams of medicine, including homoeopathy, ayurveda and naturopathy.
The minister visited the proposed site of the college on Sunday and inspected the ongoing work for the boundary wall, which has already commenced. He was briefed by the engineers and senior experts from the Department of Ayush about the details of the institution, which will be spread over an area of more than 8 acres. He said that the open space will be utilised later on for construction of an auditorium, playground, etc.
Dr Singh expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for approving the project, which he said was a matter of pride for the people of Kathua. He said that the experience after Covid has further consolidated the view that traditional Indian methods of medicine and cure have a panacea value. He also highlighted the medical infrastructure of Kathua built in the last ten years, which includes a government medical college and a cancer treatment facility being provided by Tata Memorial Centre, Bombay.
He said that the addition of a government homoeopathic college will make Kathua an integrated and cost-effective healthcare centre of North India in times to come. He also addressed the criticism regarding development in the constituency, stating that despite naysayers, significant progress has been made, with three centrally funded medical colleges established in recent years. He pointed out the introduction of Vande Bharat trains and the upcoming Express Road Corridor from Katra to Delhi as further indicators of development.
