Tata Motors’ Sanand Plant Set for EV Production from April

Tata Motors, India’s leading automobile company, is gearing up to start the production of electric vehicles (EVs) at its newly acquired Sanand plant in Gujarat from April 2024. The company aims to leverage the state-of-the-art facility and the strong supplier network in the region to boost its EV portfolio and market share.

The Sanand plant was bought from Ford India for Rs 725.7 crore in January 2023. It has an installed capacity of 300,000 units per annum, which can be scaled up to 420,000 units per annum. The plant houses four main shops – Stamping, Body construction, Paint and Final assembly shop – and they are equipped with high level of automation and latest technology.

The company has already commenced the production of internal combustion engine (ICE) powered versions of the Nexon at the Sanand plant. The Nexon EV, which is currently the best-selling EV in India, will be the first electric car to roll out of the new facility in April. Tata Motors plans to introduce more EV models at the plant in the coming months, including the Curvv EV and the Harrier EV.

The Curvv EV is a compact SUV that is expected to be launched around the second or third quarter of this calendar year. It will feature a futuristic design, a spacious cabin and a range of smart features. The Harrier EV is an electric version of the popular mid-size SUV that is likely to be introduced by the end of this year. It will offer a premium and comfortable driving experience with a long battery life.

Tata Motors is one of the pioneers of electric mobility in India, with a vision to make EVs accessible and affordable for the masses. The company has a robust pipeline of “New Forever” products that are future-ready and compliant with the latest emission norms. The company also invests in developing charging infrastructure and promoting customer awareness about EVs.

With the new Sanand plant, Tata Motors hopes to strengthen its position as a leader in the EV segment and cater to the growing demand for eco-friendly vehicles in the country.
