Suzuki’s expansion plans in Gujarat
Toshihiro Suzuki, the global CEO of Suzuki Motor Corporation, has announced a major investment plan for expanding the production capacity of Suzuki Motor Gujarat (SMG), the subsidiary of the Japanese automaker in India. Speaking at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2024, Suzuki said that the Suzuki Group will invest Rs 3200 crore in SMG to add a new 4th production line that can produce 2.5 lakh units per year. This will increase the annual production capacity of SMG from the current 7.5 lakh to 10 lakh units .
Suzuki’s second car plant in Gujarat
Suzuki also revealed that the Suzuki Group will invest Rs 35,000 crore towards a second car plant in Gujarat, which will have a production capacity of another 10 lakh units per year. With this, Suzuki Motors’ annual production capacity in Gujarat would be around 20 lakh units, making it one of the largest automobile manufacturing hubs in the country .
Suzuki’s confidence in India’s auto market
Suzuki expressed his honour at being invited to the summit and lauded the remarkable growth of the Indian automobile market in the past decade. He acknowledged the strong leadership and unwavering support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and emphasized that India has now secured its position as the third-largest automobile market globally . He also said that Suzuki is committed to contribute to India’s economic development and environmental protection by introducing electric vehicles and battery manufacturing in the future .
