SHRESHTA: A Scheme for Progress

SHRESHTA is a new scheme launched by the government to provide quality residential education to meritorious SC students in the best private schools in the country. The scheme aims to empower SC students and facilitate their socio-economic progress.

What is SHRESHTA?

SHRESHTA stands for Scheme for Residential Education for Students in High Schools in Targeted Areas. It is a scheme formulated by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment with the objective to provide access to high quality residential education to the meritorious poor students from Scheduled Caste communities, whose parental annual income is up to Rs. 2.5 Lakh per annum, at free of cost from class 9th to class 12th.

How does SHRESHTA work?

Under SHRESHTA, each year a specified number of meritorious SC students (Approx 3000) in States / UTs are selected through a transparent mechanism of a National Entrance Test for SHRESHTA (NETS) , conducted by the National Testing Agency ( NTA ) . Selected students are admitted in the Best Private Residential Schools, affiliated by CBSE, in classes 9th and 11th for completion of education till 12th standard.

Thereafter, the students may be connected to Post Metric Scholarship Scheme or Top – Class Education Scheme of the Ministry to continue their further studies with adequate financial aid from the Government of India.

How to apply

The interested candidates can apply online for SHRESHTA through the official website of NTA (https://shreshta.nta.nic.in/). The candidates have to fill the online application form, upload the required documents, pay the application fee and download the confirmation page. The candidates have to appear for the NETS exam as per the schedule and admit card issued by NTA. The candidates have to choose their preferred schools through e-counselling process after the declaration of results.
